Acupuncture - A system of integrative medicine that involves pricking the skin or tissues with needles, used to alleviate pain and to treat various physical, mental, and emotional conditions.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
While everyone’s experience with acupuncture is different, it does not cause pain or discomfort. Many times you will NOT feel the needle being inserted as they are very thin and gently inserted, but sometimes people can feel a small pinch.
Once the needle reaches its intended depth, some people might feel:
- mild or dull ache,
- slight tingling sensation, or
- heavy or electrical sensation
All of these feelings are normal, and shows that the treatment is working and the acupuncture point is being activated. However, none of the feelings you should feel are painful and most of the time the feeling might only last a few seconds. If for any reason you do feel a sharp or severe pain, you need to let your acupuncturist know right away and they can take appropriate actions to alleviate the discomfort
How big are the Acupuncture Needles?
Acupuncture needles are tiny… on average they are 0.20mm, sometimes even thinner.
To help put that into perspective a sewing needle is 1.02mm, a medical syringe is 28.5 mm and a match stick is 42 mm.
How can Acupuncture Help Me?
Acupuncture has been a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. By inserting thin needles into the body as specific points, it helps balance the flow of energy, also known as life force Qi throughout your body. The goal of acupuncture is to remove energy blockages and balance your energy flow, which helps to regulate your emotional, mental, and physical health.
Here at Pure Health we have treated many different types of imbalances, and focus on helping people with anxiety and stress management, reducing pain and pregnancy support.
